Striker Luis Fabiano was also rested after damaging a bone in his right foot during Sevilla’s penultimate training session. He missed the weekend match as a precaution.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Arsenal: At the moment it is impossible to take your eyes off Cesc Fabregas as the 20-year-old with a wise footballing head on young shoulders controls games from midfield with speed of thought and foot, the vision to pick out a pass and the technical skill to execute it. His contribution against Spurs on Saturday included two assists and a thunderous goal – one of five he has scored already this season.

Sevilla: The French-born Malian striker Fredi Kanoute is no stranger to Arsenal, having played against the Gunners for both West Ham and Tottenham Hostpur in London derbies during his time in England, when he was sometimes perceived to be a bit of ‘luxury’ player. But since moving to Spain with Sevilla he has been outstanding, averaging a goal every two games for the Anmdalucians and providing the influential spearhead for the team. His speed, awareness and clinical finishing mean he could well punish any hesitation or waywardness in the Arsenal defence.
